Geothermal energy is an inexhaustible resource, independent of seasons or daily cycles. Our goal is to use the advanced exploration and production methods we developed for the oil and gas industry and apply them to geothermal energy. Having this transferable expertise positions Ad Terra to be an important contributor to the Swiss and international energy transition.
The use of geothermal probes has become standard for heating new buildings constructed in Switzerland and across Northern Europe. Medium-depth geothermal energy already supplies large parts of Paris. Deep geothermal energy provides more than half of the electricity consumed in Iceland, Costa Rica, and Tuscany.
These advances allow the partial replacement of fossil fuels by an equally natural but inexhaustible resource: the natural heat flux emitted by the Earth’s crust and mantle.
At Ad Terra Energy, we use our expertise and knowledge of the Earth’s subsurface to support our clients and partners in their efforts to produce geothermal energy. The skills and equipment needed for exploring and developing oil and gas reservoirs are complementary to those needed for geothermics. As a result, we are able to provide the most advanced technology to identify the ideal reservoir, drill efficiently and safely, and produce heat in a sustainable and efficient manner.
We have developed conceptual models that use subsurface CO2 stocks, featuring closed systems that combine geothermal energy and natural gas. These innovations are realised together with our industry and international research partners.
Sustainability and economic success
The GeoCogen Eclépens deep geothermal project aims to produce electricity and heat in the region of Eclépens, located in the canton of Vaud. The hydrothermal technology used in this project removes the need for stimulation methods or fracking.
This technology has been used in the Paris basin for more than 40 years to extend the heating network. It currently supplies almost 40% of the Greater Paris area. In the region of Munich, the first geothermal power plant in Unterhaching is being supplemented a network of more than 15 additional power plants. Together they provide reliable and 100% renewable heat and electricity. None of these installations have caused any earthquakes or damage.
Encouraged by these positive geothermal success stories, we plan to start seismic prospecting via 3D reflection in 2022-23. This project is backed by our in-depth knowledge of the Swiss subsoil and its associated resource potential, particularly in the canton of Vaud.
We already have a surface exploration licence granted by the Canton of Vaud and support from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy.
This project can only be achieved with the support of the public and local authorities. In Autumn 2021, the project will be presented to the municipalities and citizens of the region. We strive to maintain an open dialogue with all stakeholders.
